Kenya makes duathlon history in pontevedra!
Kenya won its first international medal in years with 23- year-old Kennedy Ochieng’s gold in the Duathlon age-group World Championship at the ITU Multisport held in Spain. The annual ITU Multisport series began on the 27th April 2019 and was held at Pontevedra, Spain. Kenya was well represented by 24 athletes competing in 2 disciplines, Cross triathlon and Duathlon. Ochieng’s victory came as a great relief for Team Kenya which had so far bagged no medals at the tournament. Despite the unusual cold temperature and lack of a good bike which he referred to as ‘smart bike’, he led throughout the race from the 10km run ,40km bike and 5km run, hitting a total time of 02:05:46.
Ochieng’s victory rekindled many memories with calls from the triathlon fraternity in Kenya to build on the gains by developing the game from the grassroots. What remains is for them to cash on the gains made to develop the sport.
